Mission Statement

Conduct a commissioning event that showcases the City of Mobile, sets the standard for all future LCS Ships and lives up the the legacy of the fine INDEPENDENCE name. The event will be done in grand style but with efficient use of funds raised.

Objectives

A. Support Navy Customs, Traditions and Mission in Commissioning Ceremony.
B. Showcase Mobile hospitality and traditions.
C. Honor the Gulf Coast Veterans and other local individuals who have served our country.
D. Honor the local workforce who brought Indy to life.
E. Increase awareness of the Navy League of the United States and its mission.

Goals

  1. Plan/arrange the mandatory receptions and activities in a manner befitting a first-in-class ship.
  2. Provide a memorable experience for the crews and their families by facilitating participation in community activities, experiencing social, cultural, and recreational offerings in Mobile.
  3. Facilitate attendance and participation of organized groups:
    a. Youth groups (Sea Cadets, NROTC Cadets, NJROTC Cadets)
    b. Veterans and military affiliated groups.
    c. Patriotic organizations.
    d. Civic organizations.
  4. Reach out to individuals and groups that traditionally do not participate in military events.
  5. Provide special opportunities for non-traditional groups and individuals to learn about the Navy’s role in national defense and the GWOT.
  6. Create high visibility for the Navy League brand in distributed materials and at commissioning events.
  7. Enroll 100 new Navy League members in the local council.
  8. Stage receptions and activities at top-notch venues that showcase Mobile values and class.
  9. Raise a minimum of $350,000 to cover the costs of receptions, events, gifts, premiums and administrative expenses.
  10. Purchase gifts for the ship, ship’s crews, and ship’s sponsor as appropriate.
  11. Make special arrangements to have Gold Star families, wounded heroes, and Congressional Medal of Honor awardees participate and be recognized.
  12. Establish a permanent commemoration of the commissioning, dedicated to those who preserve independence.
  13. Prepare professional website, presentations, brochures, and other materials that demonstrate a commitment to a first-class operation.
  14. Make all reasonable steps to ensure the safety of all participants and guests.
