A TRADITIONAL NAVY COMMISSIONING CEREMONY WILL TAKE PLACE ON JANUARY 16TH 2010 MARKING THE ENTRANCE OF USS INDEPENDENCE (LCS 2) INTO THE FLEET.

A commissioning of a ship marks her entry into active Navy service. A ship becomes a Navy command when the commissioning pennant is broken at the masthead. Once commissioned, the Commanding Officer and the crew are entrusted with the responsibility of maintaining their ship's readiness in peace and of conducting successful operations during wartime. The tradition of commissioning ceremonies is three centuries old in British Navy. It dates back to 1775 in the United States when Alfred, the first ship of the Continental Navy, was commissioned in Philadelphia.

The Mobile Council of the Navy League is hosting events associated with the commissioning of the USS INDEPENDENCE (LCS 2) in Mobile Alabama. The Navy will conduct the Commissioning Ceremony at Memorial Park downtown Mobile.

ADM Gary Roughead, the Chief of Naval Operations, will be the Principal speaker.

During the ceremony the commissioning pennant will be broken and the Commanding Officer will take command of his ship. The ship's Sponsor will call the crew to the rail and the crew will man USS INDEPENDENCE , set the first watch and bring USS INDEPENDENCE alive.

You are invited to assist the Commissioning Committee in ensuring that Mobile welcomes the crews and share with them our southern hospitality. Activities for the crews, plankowner plaques, and associated events are sponsored by local donations. All donations are greatly appreciated and you can click on the "donate" above to get more details.
