Independence Commissioning Committee Launches Web site Thursday, Nov 05, 2009(Mobile) – The USS Independence Commissioning Committee has launched a Web site to inform the public and interested parties about plans to commission the Navy’s newest warship in Mobile, Ala., on January 16, 2010.
The Web site’s address is http://www.ussindependenceship.org.
“There’s a lot of great information on this site for anyone interested in learning more about the Independence and what it means to the Navy and Mobile,” said committee chairman Mike Dow. “We will be continually updating the site between now and the commissioning date,” he said.
The site includes news updates, a photo gallery, ship’s specifications, information about the ship’s two crews (Blue Crew and Gold Crew) and commanding officers, information about how to make donations and help sponsor the commissioning events and a link to the ship’s official homepage.
The Independence, one of two models the Navy is considering for its next generation of littoral combat ships (LCS), is designed to operate in shallow, coastal areas. The ship is meant to be fast, highly maneuverable and equipped to support a variety of missions. The LCS will offer interchangeable “mission packages,” which means that with “plug and play modules” and sailors trained to fill multiple roles, this new class of warship is the most versatile ever imagined.
